Reading and everything else young students learn in their first years of school has to be full of meaning, related to real things, and real life so it makes sense and "clicks" in all different minds.
Teaching with meaning is the most important new "idea" teachers need to get on board with. School districts are getting on board with this new research and are making their employees educated on the latest in this field as well.
And it is well worth it...
